Cool! Addendum to this:

Between steps 7 and 8, flatten the hair layers so your burn tool picks up on all the levels. :-)

Example of this sort of out of date "realistic" technique to shade hair in a finished product:

Last note, though I guess it can work for anything, this type of shading works best for 'real' hair look in 'real' hair colours.
